报告摘要:In this talk, I will discuss our recent works on navigation using spins. The talk consists of two parts. In Part 1, following a brief introduction of the importance of navigation and the general principles of navigation using spins, I will present one of our theoretical works on biocompass. People believe that some migrating birds employ the geomagnetic field to orientate and navigate. However, the underlying microscopic mechanisms are still under debate. I will discuss our theoretical work on the “biocompass” system, which allows birds to “see” the earth magnetic fields.  In Part 2, I will introduce our experimental progress on atomic gyroscope. We use the electron spins of alkali metal atoms (e.g., Rb atoms) and nuclear spins of noble gas atoms (e.g., Xe atoms) to implement nuclear magnetic resonance gyroscope. This part will focus on the microscopic mechanism of spin-exchange pumping process between Rb and Xe atoms and its applications in spin-based gyroscope.

报告人简介:赵楠,北京计算科学研究中心研究员。2003年获清华大学物理学学士学位,2009年获清华大学物理学博士学位。先后在理论物理所(访问学者)、香港中文大学物理系(博士后)和德国斯图加特大学(博士后)工作。主要研究方向是自旋相关的物理过程、量子效应和潜在的高新技术基础。曾针对以金刚石色心为代表的一系列固态自旋体系的量子相干性及其精密测量应用进行了研究。目前继续固态自旋系统动力学方向进行深入系统研究的同时,2016年起负责建设量子精密测量实验室,开展自旋陀螺物理原理的实验研究。
